The New Garden

Exhibition

10 May 2015 — 31 Dec 2022

The New Garden has been part of the outdoor space of Het Nieuwe Instituut since 2015. It is used to raise current design issues. Ecological management and creating a high level of biodiversity are the starting points. In the winter of 2021, the garden was redesigned due to the restructuring of the Museum Park. In the coming years, work will be done on the ecological restoration of the garden and it will come into full bloom once more.

How much energy do we have and need today? This question opens The Energy Show – Sun, Solar and Human Power, an exhibition that can be seen from 3 September 2022 through 5 March 2023 at Het Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam. The exhibition, put together by curator and designer Matylda Krzykowski and in collaboration with The Solar Biennale, revolves around the sun and its design possibilities. Symposium

Disclosing Futures Rethinking Heritage

Conference

Wed 02 Nov 2022, 10:00 — 18:30

Heritage innovates. It does this partly through technological progress, but mainly by questioning current practice. A collection is not a neutral representation of the past, but acquires meaning through interactions with, and interpretations of, new generations of users. This means that heritage must, by definition, be future-oriented. At the conference Disclosing Futures – Rethinking Heritage, on 2, 3 and 4 November in Het Nieuwe Instituut, we will discuss the reorientation of the role of heritage, and innovation as a condition for sustainable collection management.

Working on Common Ground Closing conference

Tue 29 Nov 2022, 14:00 — 18:00

If design can help us to counter the ongoing ecological devastation of the earth, and can support the cultivation of mutually supportive relations between humans and non-humans, this should inform not only the cultural imagination, but also governmental policies, legal frameworks, and broader social infrastructures.

The Working on Common Ground conference takes its starting point in Have we met?, the Dutch contribution to the 23rd Triennale Milano. In Working on common ground, Het Nieuwe Instituut, who put the exhibition together, collaborates with cheFare, agency for cultural transformation from Milan. The conference investigates the Dutch and Italian environments to discover both overlapping characteristics and location-specific aspects of two ecological realities and explores the potential for fostering  multispecies communities.
