In recent weeks, Rotterdam has seen a bright pink city stage become a reality on the roof of Het Nieuwe Instituut. The Podium, a design by architecture office MVRDV, is an initiative of Het Nieuwe Instituut, the national museum for architecture, design and digital culture. On Wednesday 1 June it was opened by Mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb.
Until 17 August 2022, visitors can climb the spectacular external staircase and look out over the city from a height of 29 metres. Throughout the month of June, The Podium will be the Festival Heart of Rotterdam Architecture Month. In July and August, The Podium is the place to be for a jazz concert or yoga class with urban views. Various activities are also planned for Rotterdam’s children, including a summer camp. Never before has the roof been accessible to visitors.
The MVRDV team was inspired by both the panoramic view from the roof of Het Nieuwe Instituut and the building design by Jo Coenen with its distinctive pergola. Recyclable materials were chosen for the scaffolding and floor finishes. The Podium fits into MVRDV’s self-made tradition of programming the roofscape. In Rotterdam, this started in 2006 with the blue rooftop construction Didden Village, and was followed by the giant staircase to the roof of the Groothandelsgebouw in 2016.
The Podium in June: Rotterdam Architecture Month
On 1 June, the Festival Heart of Rotterdam Architecture Month opens on The Podium with a kick-off lecture by architect Ninke Happel of Happel Cornelisse Verhoeven Architects. Architecture events can be followed on the pink stage throughout June. Downstairs in Het Nieuwe Instituut, you can visit RA Month’s main exhibition (T)Huis (House/Home), designed by Namelok. Access to the Festival Heart is free.
Architecture festivals, lectures, tours, exhibitions, films and much more have been organised throughout Rotterdam during June, in cooperation with more than 80 partners. The theme in 2022 is Vista Rotterdam! with two special crowd pullers offering a unique view of Rotterdam: the Festival Heart with pink Podium at Het Nieuwe Instituut, and the orange Rotterdam Rooftop Walk from Rotterdam Rooftop Days.
The Podium in July and August: from Motel Mozaïque to North Sea Jazz
The Podium can be visited from 1 July to 17 August for a wide range of performances from partners including Motel Mozaïque, the NN North Sea Jazz Festival, Operator, Roffa Mon Amour and the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. See what’s on here.
