As a working environment, after all, the office is the place where ideas and projects move fluidly back and forth between present, past and future.

Het Nieuwe Instituut works with Rotterdam-based collective Concrete Blossom and its founder Malique Mohamud on a regular and intensive basis. As partners in a long-term trajectory, the institute and collective combine their efforts to research and experiment with possible approaches to cultural programming and institutional practice that are better attuned to the needs and potential of a super-diverse city like Rotterdam. Together, we explore the Inbetween, a (design) domain found in the space between formal institutions and the informal knowledge and art produced by a multifaceted contemporary counterculture.

Starting in the Spring of 2019, 100 years after the foundation of Bauhaus, Het Nieuwe Instituut transforms into Neuhaus, a temporary transdisciplinary academy for more-than-human knowledge. Het Nieuwe Instituut joins the worldwide celebration of the Bauhaus centenary not by glorifying the historical achievements of this legendary school, but rather by reactivating and embodying its original spirit.

Featuring architectural sketches showing elegant ladies parading through the streets, chic gentlemen posing in front of villas and children enjoying an endless summer in front of their summer house. Part of the Temporary Fashion Museum.

New housing for the elderly in the archives of Het Nieuwe Instituut

In the spring of 2015 architecture-history and art-history students from the VU University in Amsterdam conducted research in the archives of Het Nieuwe Instituut into the development of housing for the elderly in the Netherlands. The archive contains a cross section of designs from the past hundred years. The variety of material shows that housing for the elderly is strongly linked to political and emancipatory processes.
