Loans to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam: designs for Nagele

From 5 April 2017 the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam is exhibiting various designs for the village of Nagele (1946-64), a village in the Noordoostpolder, from the collection of Het Nieuwe Instituut. Although designed to house only a few thousand agricultural workers, Nagele is a classic example of post-war modernist architecture and town planning: with extensive green areas; row housing; separation of living, working, leisure and traffic; and a contemporary shopping centre.

NWO Grant for embedded researcher in Critical Making

The Critical Making NL consortium, consisting of Leiden University (Academy of Creative and Performing Arts), Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences (Willem de Kooning Academy, Creating 010), Het Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam, Waag Society in Amsterdam and West Den Haag, has been awarded a NWO grant for the project ‘Bridging Art, Design and Technology Through Critical Making'.

Het Nieuwe Instituut supports campaign ‘Protect the European Union’

Het Nieuwe Instituut is proud to partner with German fine-art photographer Wolfgang Tillmans and Jop van Bennekom and Gert Jonkers, founders of Fantastic Man, for the Protect the European Union campaign, in collaboration with De Balie (Amsterdam), Cookies, Foam (Amsterdam) and Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art (Rotterdam). The campaign's focus is the protection of the EU against the current wildfire of political negativity.

Het Nieuwe Instituut and 100 Years of De Stijl

To celebrate the hundredth anniversary of De Stijl, Het Nieuwe Instituut has formed partnerships with several other cultural institutions, including a co-production with the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague. The State Archive for Dutch Architecture and Urban Planning is lending hundreds of works to various exhibitions being staged to mark the centenary of De Stijl.

Migration and the Role of Architects and Designers

In light of the recent events in the US and the responses the immigration ban has triggered all over the world, we invite the design community to join Het Nieuwe Instituut’s ongoing programme of activities around migration and the role of architects and designers as relevant figures in the current socio-political context.

Cataloguing of the Pi de Bruijn archive begun

In the summer of 2016 Het Nieuwe Instituut began cataloguing the extensive archive of Pi de Bruijn (*1942). Among De Bruijn’s best-known projects are the expansion of the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam (1984-1988), the new building for the Dutch House of Representatives (1981-1992), and the rebuilding of the Roombeek neighbourhood (2002-08) following the Enschede Fireworks Disaster. His work as a supervisor is an example of the changing role of the architect and urban planner.
