All the calls are listed here in a regularly updated overview.
Open Call Venice Architecture Biennale 2023
The Biennale as Metabolism
Het Nieuwe Instituut and Creative Industries Fund NL are launching an open call for proposals from (landscape) architects, urban planners and spatial researchers that will expose the invisible flows of materials, waste and labour that lie behind the exhibitions at the Venice Architecture Biennale. Mapping and visualising this metabolism can increase the insight and awareness needed to develop a more sustainable biennale that makes a positive contribution to the Venetian ecosystem.
Het Nieuwe Instituut is offering designers, makers and others the chance to share their own solar energy concepts through Solar Ideas, an open call for objects, drawings, photos, texts and other contributions. Selected submissions will be featured in The Energy Show exhibition. The deadline for contributions is 21 August.

Call For Fellows 2022: Testing Grounds
Since its foundation in 2013, Het Nieuwe Instituut has carried out and supported research in architecture, design and digital culture. Exhibitions, lectures, archival investigations and publications have served as outputs of research, but more importantly as active platforms for its development. Het Nieuwe Instituut’s Fellowship Programme has a fundamental role in these platforms. Intended as a means of supporting and learning from a variety of research initiatives and methodologies, the fellowship is ultimately an opportunity to rehearse other modes of thinking and doing. For this year's theme, the Research department proposes Testing Grounds as the focus for the 2022 Open Call. The deadline is August 10.
Design Drafts: Is design just a game?
Het Nieuwe Instituut’s Design Drafts programme in collaboration with Disegno Journal (London) presents an open call for up-and-coming design writers and writings, to investigate and draft what it means to write about design today. By responding to the question: “Is design just a game?” six selected applicants will be invited to participate in ideation, writing, editing and publishing sessions with the Disegno and Het Nieuwe Instituut teams, in order to write a contribution in the format of their preference. Deadline for submission is 28 May 2022.
Your talent on The Podium
Are you incredibly talented and not afraid of heights? This summer, a unique building will appear on top of Het Nieuwe Instituut, designed by architects MVRDV. At a considerable height, with a view over Rotterdam, it will be the place for special performances, talks and more. And the best thing is – you’re invited to be part of it! The possibilities are (almost) completely endless for you as a performer, collective, act or creative Rotterdammer. Apply before 1 May 2022 and show what you can do on The Podium: whether it’s your tuba concert, yoga workshop, performance art piece, brass band, fashion show, book presentation, dance performance, spoken word or something completely different!

The Network Archives Design and Digital Culture (NADD) invites applications for a research residency scheduled for a three-month period from September to November 2022. Proposals to address these issues can be submitted until 10 April 2022 (23:59 CET). Two residency positions will be awarded, each with a stipend of 5,000 euros.
