The French artist Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster created a work especially for Sonneveld House that will be on show from 13 November 2016 until 6 March 2017 in the museum house.
Opera-House by Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster is a conceptual domestic opera based on early 20th-century operatic music and technology. It is about the experience of moving from a traditional to a modern environment. Before they moved to their large, light villa, the Sonneveld family lived in a dark and stately 19th-century townhouse.
Taking an experimental approach to exhibition conventions, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster creates a conceptually driven installation in which time and space are reinvented. Gonzalez-Foerster transforms Sonneveld House into a theatrical space by means of various soundtracks and objects. In an instant, the static environment of the house becomes a symphonic platform for the visitor to actively explore.
Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster’s intervention in Sonneveld House is part of a series curated by Erich Weiss. The confrontation with contemporary art and design sets the carefully restored monument in a contemporary context.
