The 1972 Olympic Games offered the host country, West Germany, an unrivalled opportunity to portray itself to the world as a modern, democratic and culturally aware nation. Various design disciplines played a central role in the preparations for the games. Architecture, design and landscape architecture were integrated in a total design intended to exude openness and inclusivity. This carefully constructed image was marred two weeks into the games when eight members of the Black September Organisation infiltrated the Olympic Village and took the Israeli team hostage.
Het Nieuwe Instituut presents interactive documentary 51 Sprints7 APRIL 2016
The interactive documentary 51 Sprints recounts the history of one of the great highlights of the modern Olympic Games: the 100-metre sprint. This history is, of course, connected with record-breaking achievements and legendary finals, but in 51 Sprints the emphasis is on the athletes as symbolic figures who represent their nation, race or gender.

Op uitnodiging van Bert Koenders Minister van Buitenlandse Zaken presenteert Malkit Shoshan dinsdag 26 januari 2016 haar project BLUE: ISLANDS IN CITIES op het Hoofdkwartier van de Verenigde Naties in New York. In het gebouw opent tevens een tentoonstelling over het project: een voorbode van de presentatie die later dit jaar te zien zal zijn op de Architectuurbiënnale van Venetië.

Under the auspices of Het Nieuwe Instituut, Malkit Shoshan has been appointed curator of the Dutch Pavilion at the 15th Venice Architecture Biennale in 2016. Shoshan, an architect and founder of the architecture think tank FAST, has been a fellow of Het Nieuwe Instituut for the past two years. Her on-going research into architecture in conflict areas fits neatly within the overarching theme for the 2016 Architecture Biennale: ‘Reporting from the Front’.
New search portal gives access to Het Nieuwe Instituut’s architecture collection19 NOVEMBER 2015
With the introduction of a new search portal – search.hetnieuweinstituut.nl – Het Nieuwe Instituut gives the public direct online access to one of the world’s largest architecture collections. The State Archive of Dutch Architecture contains 1.4 million drawings; 300,000 photographs; 2,500 models and 70,000 books and magazines, which together document the history of Dutch architecture and urbanism. Among other features, the search portal allows professional researchers and others to consult 130,000 images in detail via a special viewer.
